The motor is controlled by a two position directional unit whose control lever would protrude through the top of the boiler between the two domes. This locomotive has a painted WHITE heat stamped number and running board stripe. Equipped with a headlight, headlight lens, and a liquid smoke unit, this locomotive was only released with a No. 234W Square tender that has a whistle mounted inside and early AAR trucks one of which has a disc coupler. A version of this locomotive has been found that is lacking the painted WHITE stripe. At this time it is unknown if this was a regular production, or merely a factory error. This locomotive was designed to work on O27 Gauge track and it will also run on O Gauge track.

The 238 2-4-2 Columbia O27 Lionel Lines was available in 1963 and 1964.
